Qatar has successfully transformed itself into one of the world’s fastest growing economy, owing to the discovery of significant oil and gas reserves in the 1970s. As of 2007, Qatar has the highest GDP per capita in the world.

Possessing more than 15% of the world’s natural gas reserves, Qatar is one of the leaders in the production and export of liquefied natural gas, oil and petrochemicals and is projected to become one of the world’s global energy giants.

In 2010 Qatar was successful in its bid to become the first Arab state to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The win has seen huge boosts in government spending on large-scale infrastructure.
