Kalala House, Department of Finance – Solomon Islands
The Kalala House project occurred as part of the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI) and involved the complete refurbishment of the existing 1960’s building to provide open plan office space suitable for the Department of Finance.
The building was designed to retain the existing footprint and roof form whilst implementing full height glazing and security screening to enable a naturally ventilated building. The detailing methodology and selection of materials was based on working within the skills of local contractors allowing for employment opportunities within the community. The use of simple and robust materials enabled the building to reduce its up-front cost whilst also reducing longer term maintenance costs.
This pragmatic approach to design enabled the building to focus on the unique and distinct context of the Solomon’s.
